Happy Valentine’s/Gal-entine’s/Pal-entine’s Day everyone! Whether you are spending the day with a significant other, with the gals or with all your pals, this dish will surely be a hit!
I made these a few years ago when my
boyfriend fiancé realized that I truly love food more than flowers. They say the way to a guys heart is through food, but hey that applies to me too! Last time we struggled a little with the shape, but this time my pepperonis were a little over cooked. No shame though, because they still tasted delicious!
So lets get started! For this you will need:
- Pizza dough (store bought or make your own)
- Pizza sauce
- Mozzarella cheese
- Pepperoni (at least 10 per each rose)
To get started, preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Next, grease a cupcake baking pan and then make sure you have a large clean working space.
First thing you want to do is roll out the dough, so it is a rectangle. If needed, use a pizza roller or knife to make it a full rectangle by removing extra dough. Now following the long side of the rectangle, use your pizza cutter to create five 1 inch wide strips.Separate your strips to make it easier to work with. Then spread a smooth layer of pizza sauce along each strip. Now it is time to add your pepperoni’s. Start on one end and lay 8-12 pepperoni’s slightly overlapping them. Also, leave a little bit of space at the bottom so the pepperoni’s stick out of the top and give you that rose look when you roll them. Now you can sprinkle mozzarella cheese along the bottom of the roll. You can use as much or as little cheese as you like. With your pizza roses complete. You are ready to roll! If you want you can sprinkle some oregano or other seasonings at this time.
To roll, you are going to start on one side and roll the full length. In the end it should look like a cinnamon roll shape…a spiral.
The pepperoni’s should stick out the top, and then once it is fully rolled, place your rose in the cupcake baking sheet.Once you finish all your rolls, it is time to bake them.
This is the difficult part. My pepperoni’s ended up burning a little because I wanted to make sure my dough fully cooked. I cooked mine for 25 minutes straight which is why they ended up burnt.
To combat this, I recommend cooking at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. At that time check on your rolls. If the pepperoni’s are starting to burn cover them with tinfoil and then place back in the oven for about 10-15 minutes. This should limit the burning or allow your pepperoni’s to brown but not burn and to ensure your dough is fully cooked.
Even though these are a little burnt on top, they are still so cute and super tasty!! And, let’s be honest. Who wouldn’t want a bouquet of pizza roses?!?!Well I hope everyone feels the love today, whether it is from a significant other, family member, gals or pals!
