Ever since a small Indian restaurant opened up down the street from me, I have been obsessed with Chicken Tikka Masala. I’ve gone to multiple restaurants and tried a variety of frozen meals before I figured I should attempt to make this dish on my own!

This was seriously different than anything I’ve ever made and there were so many new spices that I had never heard of! I am so happy I stepped out of my comfort zone and made this dish. It was so delicious!img_4800.jpg


Just a small disclaimer, this dish made my apartment smell like tikka masala for a full week…. which just made me constantly crave it!

To start, you should pull together all the ingredients:

Chicken Marinade

  • 2 lbs of boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 2/3 cup of plain yogurt
  • 1 Tbsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp coriander
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Sauce

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground fenugreek
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 14 oz can of tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup milk

Serve with

  • Basmati Rice
  • Garlic Naan

To start you want to cube the chicken breasts. Then in a separate container you should mix the yogurt, garam masala, coriander and salt. Once fully mixed you can add in the cubed chicken and mix until the chicken is fully coated. Then, cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.

After those two hours, you can start to prepare the sauce. Start by dicing the onion into large chunks. In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the vegetable oil and the onions. Sauté until the onions are soft, then add the ginger, garlic, cumin, fenugreek and salt. Mix well.

After about a minute, add the tomato paste and mix well. Next add the marinated chicken to the large pan and mix well. Finally add the milk and tomato sauce. Mix everything together and let it simmer for 15 minutes.

While your chicken tikka masala simmers, you can toast your garlic naan and prepare the Basmati rice.

Once finished cooking, scoop the chicken tikka masala into a bowl so you get the chicken and the sauce. I like to eat it all together to get all the flavors in one bite! We had so many left overs from this dish and it was just as good the next day !img_4819.jpg
